BPM invests in Bath & West Community Energy (BWCE)

Community-owned renewable energy projects have significant impact, not only environmentally, but also on our local economies. Having a positive impact on our own community is something we value highly at BPM, so we’re pleased to share that we’re now a member of the Bath and West Community Energy Organisation (BWCE), a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society developing community-owned clean energy generation.

BWCE is a member organisation that works to put people at the heart of all by placing the ownership and control of energy in local hands. It works to develop clean local energy projects that actively involve and benefit communities in Bath & Northeast Somerset and surrounding areas. Over the course of 10 years, 13.2MW of renewable energy (enough to power nearly 4,500 homes) has been installed, which includes solar PV on the roofs of sixteen schools.

By keeping the local people’s interests firmly at its core, BWCE provides several community benefits through:

  • The BWCE Fund, providing grants for environmental projects in the local communities.
  • Re-circulating 30-40% of the income in the local economy.
  • Development work, which supports community groups and parish councils to set up renewable energy projects for community benefit.
  • A Supporters Network, to build awareness around community energy and its benefits while engaging people in action to build the community energy movement locally.
  • Resources and events that boost local skills and knowledge around community energy.
  • Building a more resilient and sustainable community energy infrastructure based on local ownership and control, which can better withstand shocks in the wider energy system and economy.

At BPM, we want to have a positive impact on our local community wherever possible. As our working philosophy and values resonate with BWCE, we’re very excited to get involved and see plenty of positive impact being made.
